Michigan business owner offers $ 4 million in Christmas bonus

LUDINGTON, MI – About 200 employees at a northern Michigan manufacturer received an average Christmas bonus of $ 20,000.

Ludington-based FloraCraft surprised its employees over a holiday lunch on Friday, December 14, when owner and chairman Lee Schoenherr announced plans to donate nearly $ 4 million in bonuses.

The best gifts to employees over 40 years of service will exceed $ 60,000, according to the company. The freebies are a combination of cash bonus and 401 (k) contributions.

“This idea has grown over the past year and it’s my way of saying ‘Thank you’ to our team for their role in our success,” Schoenherr said in a statement. “My wife, Joan, and I are blessed in We want to share these blessings with the men and women whose energy, passion and loyalty inspire us every day.

The giveaway does not indicate that Schroenherr is retiring or selling the business, he added.

A family business, FloraCraft is the world’s leading manufacturer of foam products for the craft and floral industry. FloraCraft products can be found at Walmart, Amazon, Michaels, JOANN, Hobby Lobby and other retailers.

The Christmas bonuses aim to recognize the role employees have played in “building a world class business in Ludington,” according to a press release.

Employees responded to the announcement with applause and gratitude, the statement said.

“It was very humiliating,” said Mary Overla, assistant production supervisor at FloraCraft. “I started to cry – it was huge for him to do something like this for everyone.”

The average seniority of the company’s employees is nine years. Some are second and third generation.

“Our employees were more than surprised – and deeply grateful for Mr. Schoenherr’s generosity,” said CEO Eric Erwin. “He wants to ensure that our employees have resources available as an immediate reward for their hard work, as well as a nest that allows them to save, plan and prepare for their future safety.

Schoenherr took the helm of the family business and renamed it in 1973, taking the company to a leading position in the industry by purchasing competitors and expanding its product line to better meet the needs of its international clientele. The history of the company dates back to 1946.
