A solution to the porch pirates? Michigan company creates “Receptor”

Day and night porch hackers have been caught by Ring cameras across the country stealing packages from homes.

Most of the time, they seem to get by.

“I think it’s crazy that all these people have these packages stolen all the time,” said Missie Nordrum.

“What our product does, it stops them, it puts them completely out of business,” said Mike Janas.

With the help of his business partner Missie Nordrum of DB Solutions based in St. Clair County, Mike Janas created “The Receptor”.

It sounds high-tech – but the concept is pretty straightforward.

“I started to prototype it, plywood boxes, to see how well it would work and how it worked,” he said. “Down and behold, it worked. “

The Receptor is the first through-the-wall delivery bin. It’s billed as a safe, secure and weatherproof space where delivery drivers drop off your packages, food orders, and up to eight bags of groceries.

It is accessible by a keypad code – which you provide to the delivery service and is controlled via your smartphone.

“Basically we dug a hole in the side of your house – just like you already have, a lot of holes in the side of your house, they’re called windows and doors, aren’t they? C ‘is the same, ”Janas said. “We cut the hole, we put this very durable and very secure box in your house. It’s weatherproof, airtight, and it’s done.

“The entire installation typically takes about three to four hours.”

The cost is approximately $ 2,800, and that includes installation. Janas and Nordrum came up with the idea for the product a few years ago – but after the pandemic hit – the receiver seemed more necessary than ever.

“No one wanted to touch anything, they wanted all of their deliveries to be placed somewhere,” Nordrum said.

Sales of their delivery solution have just started, but the product is already growing in popularity.

The Michigan Manufacturing Association has ranked the Receptor as one of the 10 coolest products made in Michigan.

DB Delivery Solutions was also recognized as the Best Small Business by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

“I see a problem and I think I can find a solution, and here I am,” Janas said.
