A participant in Birmingham, Michigan school board meeting gives a Nazi salute while discussing mask warrants

Police in Birmingham, Michigan are investigating whether a man who gave a Nazi salute at a school board meeting committed a hate crime. At the Birmingham board meeting on Wednesday evening, board members and parents gathered to talk about a school mask tenure. After the board announced that staff and students would be required to wear face coverings after the start of the school year, some attendees were furious. They spread misinformation about how dangerous masks are for children, but the uproar didn’t end there.

As a black woman and a Jewish woman stood up to speak at the meeting and show their support for a mask warrant, one participant stood up and said, “Heil Hitler” while giving a Nazi salute. . Two men behind him are said to have repeated the phrase. Superintendent Embekka Roberson wrote in a letter to parents that the district “strongly denounces and will not tolerate” racism or violence. “Last night’s meeting did not always display the behaviors we expect from our students and our community,” she wrote. Despite the awkward interruption, the meeting continued with some parents even threatening to remove their children from school if they were to wear masks.
